“Summer Wine” is a song written by Lee Hazlewood. It was originally sung by Suzi Jane Hokom and Lee Hazlewood in 1966, but it was made famous by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood in 1967. This version was originally released as the B-side of “Sugar Town” the previous year, before featuring on the Nancy & Lee LP in 1968. It was the first of Sinatra and Hazlewood’s string of popular duets.

Lyrically, “Summer Wine” describes a man, voiced by Hazlewood, who meets a woman, Sinatra, who notices his silver spurs and invites him to have wine with her. After heavy drinking, the man awakens hungover to find his spurs and money have been stolen by the mysterious woman; the subtext of which being they experienced intercourse and as repayment she misappropriated them (them being his “silver spurs a dollar and a dime”).

Song info sourced from http://en.wikipedia.org/
The duet by Andrea Corr and Bono appeared on The Corrs Live in Dublin Album, 2002.

“In a Lifetime” is a pop song performed by Irish artists Clannad and Bono. It was written by brothers Pól Brennan and Ciarán Brennan and produced by Steve Nye. The single was released in January 1986, and was the third single to be released from Clannad’s eighth studio album Macalla (1985).

It is one of Clannad’s most successful songs and it remains as Bono’s most successful solo effort.

The video was shot in Clannad’s hometown of Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland. It is set in 1930′s Ireland and it is based on the lives of local folk around this time. It shows young children walking along a narrow road in the countryside, followed by a hearse. It also shows old men drinking in a pub. The video, which was directed by Meiert Avis, was praised for its haunting portrayal of the Irish countryside and old Irish traditions.

Fancy doing a riff with The Edge? Well you may be able to soon thanks to a new Music App called “WholeWorldBand”.

U2′s The Edge, along with other top Irish and International music names are working on the “WholeWorldBand” app, which will be available for download from iTunes in March.

The idea is the brainchild of former 10CC band member Kevin Godley, and Andy Wood of Cult Motion.

The App will allow Musicians and music fans alike from all over the world will be able to submit their own selection of videos to the “WholeWorldBand” library to create their own favourite band line up, and be given the opportunity to earn money from their performances.

Kevin Godley said: “WholeWorldBand is a revolutionary new online music tool that provides a new platform for distribution while offering the opportunity of new revenue streams for up and coming and established musicians and bands and, in fact, anyone.”

The idea behind the “WholeWorldBand” app is to allows users to choose a track or add themselves to performances of well known acts, or to substitute a famous band member for themselves. Musicians can then record themselves playing or singing with a track, and upload the video to Facebook or Youtube for fellow musicians to watch.

A host of stars Major recording artists including Gavin Friday, The Edge (U2), Ron Wood (Rolling Stones), Gemma Hayes, Cathy Davey, Mik Pyro (Republic of Loose) and Liam O’Maonlai (Hot House Flowers) are already creating performances for the new WholeWorldBand iPhone/iPad app.

The WholeWorldBand app, will be demonstrated at The Music Show on 25 and 26 February, which takes place in the RDS, Dublin.

Twenty years after the release of ‘Achtung Baby’, director Davis Guggenheim’s documentary ‘From The Sky Down’ will open the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Guggenheim (Waiting for Superman, An Inconvenient Truth, It Might Get Loud) charts this groundbreaking album with new interviews, stories and unseen footage from Berlin and Dublin. Now a key chapter in their career, Achtung Baby was, in Bono’s words, ‘the sound of four men chopping down The Joshua Tree’.

‘In the terrain of rock bands, implosion or explosion is seemingly inevitable, ‘ explains Guggenheim. ‘U2 has defied the gravitational pull towards destruction, this band has endured and thrived. The movie From The Sky Down asks the question why.’

The Toronto International Film Festival® opens September 8 with the world premiere Gala Presentation of From the Sky Down, the first time in 36 years that the Festival has opened with a documentary.

‘It’s Been Magical…’

Snow Patrol have played more dates with U2 on the 360 Tour than anyone
else and they’re back for three more in Mexico this week.

Singer and mainman Gary
Lightbody, who first wrote us this great piece after the show in Poland in 2009, again mused on life on the road with U2 ahead of the Istanbul show last Autumn: ‘A good time to say our thank yous for a tour like no other.’

‘We are not U2. That is one of the things you learn from touring with them. We may have an amazing experience entertaining their audience on their stage but we are merely borrowing their space and time. We may think ourselves pretty damn special walking off that stage some nights, most nights truth be told, to the cheers and the raised arms of a crowd won over. We may think ourselves indestructible and we may think ourselves, as my father would say, quite the thing. We’ll go back to the dressing room and hug each other as we do (we’re friends you know) and talk of the battle victorious and ‘did you see the girl with the banner that said ‘something something snow patrol something’ and I’ll take a shower and in fresh socks and pants consider myself king of the castle. Then, buffed and shined, I’ll find my way to the mixing desk in time to see four men from Dublin stride out onto the circular and towering stage we have not but half an hour ago graced.

Then comes the noise and the lights and heartbeat in my throat and the arms aloft in front of me of a heaving crowd at worship and I think to myself – EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT – I think… FUCK ME!

No, we are not U2.

We are Snow Patrol and we are on tour with the biggest band on planet earth. Except we’re not for much longer. So I thought it a good time to say our thank yous for a tour like no other with some of the finest people we have met in music. The band, their crew, their management, the caterers, everyone on the tour are all the finest sorts of people. The kind that welcome folk, folk like us I mean, (I’ll stop with the cowboy talk now) with the kind of ease, grace and humour as we’ve rarely experienced. We’ve supported many bands before. Many have treated us right well too (Supergrass, Travis, Grandaddy, Athlete, to name but a few), some that did not (nameless they’ll remain but you’re curious I can sense. I’ll never tell. Even under torture. Actually under torture I’ll tell. In fact I’ll tell with just the threat of torture but not now).

It is those that did not treat us well though that make it all the more incredible that U2 treat their supports with such warmth. If the biggest band in the world does it like this then EVERY BAND should. We have pretty much modelled our ethos on theirs and to an extent our music too (some would argue a little too closely, ha) and we have learned so much from seeing it all happening up close. They’ve had plenty praise, and justified too, from far greater men than me though so I’d like to simply say we’ll never forget this 360 tour and thank you guys – Larry, Adam, The Edge and Bono – for making room on your spaceship. It’s been magical.

A massive thank you to all the crew who looked after us and our own crew like we were part of the family. I know our boys and girls on the SP crew would want me to say how much you’ve helped them and made things so easy and seamless. You’re all fucking legends. A special mention has to go to Rocko who, given half the chance, we’d steal and keep forever as our fearless leader. My friend you are our brother for always.

Thank you also to Paul, Susan, all the management and all the beautiful ladies that work for the guys. You’re all amazing. I’ve never seen anyone work so god damn hard! Thank you so much for everything. And to the people that have fed us every show for off and on a year now. My god did we eat like kings? Did we ever. We’re sure gonna miss solid food.

Also a huge thank you to all the U2 fans that gave us the time of day. It’s a tricky thing to go on before them because we know how long the people in front of us have waited and we are the only other hurdle before their prize. That being said every crowd, everywhere, has treated us brilliantly. You’ve sung and cheered and shown us love. We’ll maybe see some of you along the way at our own shows.

Friday night in Athens I finally got (took me long enough!) why Bono is fond of saying ‘What time is it?’ and ‘Where are we going now?’ in between songs. They have created a show, an experience, that seems to lift off from the ground and take you on a wild, woozy ride through time and space. It is, though, no blissed out acid trip, quite the opposite. It is a galvanising, humanising journey with 80,000 other people all sharing the same ride and becoming closer for the sound, feel, touch and thrill of it.

I was, each night, as thrilled as anyone in the audience to bear witness. When I think back on this tour the one image that will resonate with me til I die is that of the upturned thumbs and fingers and green ribboned hands making the heart sign as the opening, rallying drums of Sunday Bloody Sunday thunder out. That ‘heart in the hands’ is the symbol for this whole experience for me. It is our last show tomorrow night in Istanbul and we are very sad to be leaving but we’ll carry the heart of this tour with us gently in our hands. Again, and forever, thank you.

Both the Jigga assisted version of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and a new mix of “Stranded” featuring Jay and Rihanna will appear on the limited edition collaborations album.

Jay-Z has always been open to collaborate with anyone he thinks is worthy, whether they be a Hip-Hop artist or a rock act, most notably his two collaborations with Chris Martin, on his own track “Beach Chair” and a remix of the Coldplay song “Lost.” So last year when Jay-Z toured Australia with Rock and Roll megastars U2 it may have come as a surprise to sum but it really shouldn’t have. During shows on that sold out stint Jay would often hop on stage with the Irish legends to perform a brand new verse during their classic single “Sunday Bloody Sunday.”

That track, released originally in 1983, was written as a commentary on “Blood Sunday” which occurred in 1972 when twenty six unarmed protesters were shot by British soldiers in the town of Derry, Ireland. Most of the victims died as a result of their wounds.

With the track’s themes of civil unrest and citizens versus armed authority it’s not surprising that this is the track that Jay-Z decided to guest on. And the collaboration was so well received that it is now being released as part of the Duals album, a record of collaborations U2 has participated in over the course of their three decade long career. The album, which also features Jay-Z guesting on another cut with Rihanna, will not be available in stores as it is only available to subscribers of the band’s website. Go here to subscribe.

Spider-Man’s Real Villain

The musical disaster show has made director Julie Taymor this season’s media piñata. But could her departure unmask another culprit?

Given all the problems plaguing Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, it was probably inevitable that someone besides the actors would fall. Since previews of the $65 million (and counting) Broadway musical began last November, four performers have been injured, including Spidey himself, who went tumbling 30 feet into the pit, breaking four ribs and sustaining a hairline fracture to his skull. OSHA descended on the Foxwoods Theatre to investigate, and fined the producers $12,600.

All might have been excused had audiences and critics actually liked the show. But with reviews like “‘Spider-Man’ is not only the most expensive musical ever to hit Broadway; it may also rank among the worst” in The New York Times, somebody had to be blamed. So it wasn’t much of a shock when the show’s celebrated director, Julie Taymor—whose Lion King has grossed $4.5 billion in its 14-year-run—finally got her walking papers last week. With much schadenfreude (Taymor isn’t the easiest director to work with, as anyone will tell you), Broadway wags are predicting she’ll never work in this town again.

But has justice been served to the real villain of Spider-Man?

The score, created by U2’s Bono and the Edge, isn’t made up of catchy, easily digestible pop songs in the “Hakuna Matata” vein. Even production sources admit to being mystified by what they describe as the joylessness of the music. “With the promise of U2, why they don’t have this big kick-ass, pulse-racing number that sends people out on a cloud is a big, big question,” one person involved with the show says. “And if Julie Taymor was standing in the way of that, she’s not anymore.”

When audiences walk out of Spider-Man, you don’t hear them singing show tunes. You hear their disapproval. “You just don’t leave with a song in your head,” Suzy Fink of Chicago says after a recent performance. “I’m a huge fan of U2, and I think my love affair just ended,” says a visibly angry JT Horenstein of New York. “Did they not spend the time to create something melodic or memorable?”

It’s a fair question to ask, given that Bono and the Edge were on tour for much of the production. “Back in December or January, Julie begged everyone to close the show temporarily so that they could make changes,” says a source close to the production who is sympathetic to Taymor. “The producers told her no. Bono and the Edge weren’t around. There was a clear breakdown in communication.” Neither Taymor, Bono, nor the Edge would comment for this story.

Rather inconveniently, by the time Bono and the Edge returned to work on the show about two weeks ago, Taymor was in California for a long-scheduled speaking commitment at the 2011 TED Conference. In her speech she explained that creating art regularly involves Sturm und Drang, and noted that Spider-Man’s theme song is “Rise Above.” Her good friend Norman Lear, who was at the conference, saw behind the upbeat mask. “She was suffering like crazy, she hated to be gone, Bono was seeing the show for the first time in months,” he says. “She’s been put through hell, and to see her taking the blame all by her frail and brilliant self, isn’t it ridiculous?”

Maybe so. What made her dismissal easy from a publicity standpoint was that she’s less famous than her collaborators and was coming off some major misfires in the film world. In 2007, Across the Universe, a musical created around the songs of the Beatles, tanked. And last fall her adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, starring Helen Mirren, earned back just $277,000 of its estimated $20 million budget.

“Julie is a poet, an obsessive, a charismatic leader, and a visionary, with the ego and fragility of all great artists,” says Mirren. “Her commitment to work and collaborators is total.” Can the same be said of her Spider-Man collaborators?

The producers of the much-delayed Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark musical have confirmed a new date for the U2-scored show’s opening night.

The show, which was due to debut in mid-March, will now officially open to the public on June 14, according to the show’s official website, Spidermanonbroadway.marvel.com.

In order to “allow rehearsal time” for script and production changes, previews scheduled between April 19 and May 11 have been cancelled.

Earlier this week, an overhaul of the show’s backroom team was announced, seeing Julie Taymor relieved of her directorial duties and new members of staff join the creative team.

Bono and The Edge have also contributed “a couple of new songs” to the musical and reaffirmed their “absolute faith” in the project.

The musical has suffered a succession of setbacks since previews began, with injuries to cast members, financial problems and cast changes all contributing to the delay.

Previews of the musical have also received scathing reviews from several prominent critics, who broke embargos and ran reviews of the show last month.

David Guetta says the opportunity to work with U2 would be an “honour”.

The French producer-and-DJ was thrilled to meet the band’s frontman Bono recently as he is a huge fan of the Irish rock group. He has revealed he is in talks to produce some tracks for U2’s new album and he hopes the plans will come to fruition soon. Although David is known for releasing successful dance tracks, he is confident he can turn his hand to a rockier sound.

“We met with Bono, and I was really excited, really honoured because he proposed me to maybe produce some tracks for the next U2 album,” Guetta told MTV News. “I started a few ideas already, yes.”

David is no stranger to star-studded collaborations, having previously worked with Kelly Rowland, Flo Rida, Rihanna and Akon.

He loves experimenting with different sounds and has a particular affinity with dance music and R&B. However, David insists he has been making every effort to broaden his horizons recently and has a respect for many other musical genres too.

“I’ve been more and more open to different styles of music, and obviously electronic music is still my main thing, but I just love music. If it’s good, it doesn’t matter what style,” he said. “After those collaborations with all these urban artists, I thought it would be a real challenge for me to try to go in that direction.”

The U2360° Tour has won the award for Best ’2010 Tour Sound Production’ at the annual TEC (Technical Excellence and Creativity) Awards in Los Angeles.

U2′s Joe O’Herlihy won in the category of Front of House Sound Engineer while 360 crew members Alastair McMillan, David Skaff, Richard Rainey and Niall Slevin picked up the award for Monitor Engineers. U2360° Tour partner Clair won Best ‘Sound Company’.

The awards are known as ‘the Grammy’s’ within the rock touring production industry and the U2 sound crew were up against talented competition from touring personell working with Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica and James Taylor and Carole King. ML Procise from Clair, who have worked with Joe and U2 for over thirty years, accepted the award on behalf of the 360 Tour.

‘It’s a fantastic accolade at beginning of the year,’ said Joe, when we caught up with him in Dublin. ‘These are the awards made by your peers in the industry and they recognise outstanding creative achievement so it’s pretty special for us to win.’

Joe and the U2 crew were also winners in 2002 for the Elevation Tour and in 2005 for Vertigo and he said this win was a special tribute to the 16-strong audio team led by Jo Ravitch, Senior System Engineer.

‘This makes it a hat-trick of wins for us but not only is the competition getting tougher every year but this time, with this 360 tour, we’re doing something quite revolutionary which required us to completely rethink how we deliver great sound in the round in stadiums. We’re delighted!’

And after a few weeks off, the team are already working on preparations for next months dates in South Africa and those in South America that follow.

‘South Africa will be amazing particularly as in Johannesburg we’ll be opening in the new stadium where the soccer World Cup Final took place last year. And we always love heading over to South America, the audiences are extraordinary, that latin passion is something we all look forward to. I’ll never forget those nights shooting the U23D movie, it’ll be great to be back.’
